Natural Acid Reflux Treatments

By Tom HouserDrugs are not always the answer when dealing with acid reflux. Most people have forgotten that the drug Propulsid was pulledoff the market several years ago after causing many deaths.Propulsid was used in the treatment of acid reflux. EvenPresident Clinton used this drug. Rather than rely on drugs to alleviate your acid refluxsymptoms, using a natural methods are what this article willfocus on. Drinking about a gallon of filtered water daily along with highdoses of quality probiotics is a good start in restoring thenormal stomach functions for most people. Ideally, you shoulddrink enough water to keep your urine a light shade of yellow. If you suffer from acid reflux, you may need to drink morewater in order to dilute the acid and get the pH levelnormalized in your stomach. Now, what are probiotics? Probiotics are dietary supplementscontaining potentially helpful bacteria or yeast. Lactic acidbacteria are the common microbe used in these supplements.Lactic acid bacteria, has been used in the food industry foryears because they convert sugars and other carbohydrates intolactic acid. This provides the sour taste in fermented dairyproducts such as yogurt. It also acts as a preservative bylowering the pH and thus causing fewer chances for organismsthat cause spoilage to grow. Probiotic bacteria cultures assist the human bodys naturallyoccurring microorganisms, ccalled gut flora that normally livein the digestive tract. Sometimes, these Probiotics arerecommended to patients by doctors and by nutritionists aftertaking antibiotics or as part of a treatment for stomachinfections. Many people believe that probiotics strengthen thebodys immune system. Maintaining healthy gut flora isdependant on plenty of factors especially on the quality offood eaten. Other natural acid reflux treatments are the wormwood herbArtemisia asiatica or garlic. Artemisia asiatica supportshealthy fungal and microbial balance. Garlic is a food that youshould be eating everyday. Garlic has the ability to optimizebowel flora and kill pathogenic organisms such as H. pylori. This particular organism is the only bacterial organism in thestomach that stomach acid cannot kill. However, the garlic must be fresh. Before eating it, you mustchew or crush it with a spoon. If you swallow the cloves wholeyou will not convert the allicin in the garlic to its activeingredient. Allicin is a very powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent found in garlic. Although allicin is not presentin garlic in its natural state, when garlic is damaged bycutting or crushing, the enzyme alliinase acts on the chemicalalliin thus converting it into allicin. Allicin is not a verystable compound as it degrades slowly upon standing. Cookingdestroys allicin quickly. In conclusion, in order to get the true effects of allicin ingarlic, you must chew or crush it right before consuming it.About the Author: Thomas D. In the past, research has shown Vitamin E to help those whohave already suffered the wrath of a heart attack. This vitaminhelps to prevent heart attacks in the future by opening up thearteries and eliminate blockage. Those who have had a heartattack in the past are always encouraged to add more vitamin Eto their diet. What many aren't aware of, is the fact that you can use vitaminC to boost the effects of vitamin E. Wu Long Teas And Weight Loss After The Holidays

For most people the holidays like Christmas, Chanukah and NewYears are special occasions that allow families to reunite andspend quality time together. Accompanying the festivities areoften parties and dinners that can result in weight gain. Manypeople often seek ways to reduce weight after the holidays areover. This is not a time for panic: crash diets and extreme exerciseprograms almost always fail and should be avoided. Weight lossshould always be part of a sensible balanced program of exerciseand diet and most experts agree that moderation and consistencyare better than excess.Strategies to Prevent Weight GainTo help prevent weight gain it is important to assess yourbehavior and environment and adopt healthy habitsThe amount and types of foods you eat, and your physical activityhabits are important factors in controlling weight. Theenvironment in which you live may also contribute to the adoptionof poor eating or exercise habits. This is especially true intoday's society, which is dominated by speed and convenience. For example, escalators, elevators and remote-control appliancesmake us less physically active and walking is less frequent thanin prior years. Also, greater availability of foods that arehigh in calories, fat and added sugars, and larger portion sizespromote unhealthy eating behaviors. In addition, reputable organizations, government agencies andindependent researchers agree on the importance of adoptinghealthy habits to prevent weight gain.Effective weight management involves behavior modification whichis a lifelong commitment and includes at least two components:Healthful eating in accordance with the Dietary Guidelines forAmericans, emphasizing a reduction in total calories, a loweredfat consumption, and an increase in vegetables, fruits and wholegrains, is an essential part of weight control.Increased frequent and regular physical activity of at leastmoderate intensity is also required.Health professionals also recommend a prescription for health andweight loss that includes: * Moderate physical activity on most days of the week of atleast 30 minutes per day for adults and 60 minutes per day forchildren. * Eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, andreasonable portion sizes at home, in schools, at worksites, andin communities. * Drinking at least eight glasses of pure water. In addition to exercise and a healthy diet, the use of Wu longtea (also spelled oolong tea or wu long tea) is growing inpopularity as a wholesome and flavorful way to limit weightgain. Will drinking Wu long tea really help lose weight? For many, Wu long tea is a helpful addition to a comprehensiveweight loss program. Wu long tea tastes good, contains healthbenefits that lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels and a cupof Wu long tea in the morning can serve as a reminder of ahealthy life style.Wu Long tea has become a premium weight loss tea that many arediscovering for the first time. If you have never enjoyed thegreat taste and slimming health benefits it is known for, you aretruly missing an incredible opportunity. Originating in theFujian Province of China, Wu Long tea has gradually beenintroduced into Western culture. Of all the tea, Wu Longrepresents the Chinese culture best. Those who enjoy the flavor and rich aroma unique to slimming WuLong tea truly understand the art of drinking it - slowly anddelicately. Using a tiny teapot and small teacup, they areinheriting a rich tradition, started by the Chinese generationsago. The health benefits of Wu long tea are many: * Rich in Theaflavin, Tea Polysaccharides and Tea Catechin, antioxidants that assist in the reduction of plaque in thearteries, in lowering cholesterol and in producing slimmingeffects. * Helps regulate blood sugar levels for diabetics. * Burns 2.5 times more calories than Green Tea, ideal for weightloss. * Promotes clear, youthful looking skin.Scientific studies have established that tea is high inhealth-promoting polyphenols that protect us against cancer andother diseases. Wu long tea is particularly high in "polymerizedpolyphenols" which according to recent studies helps to increaseenergy expenditure. One recent study found that energy expenditure increased by 10%for a period of 2 hours after drinking wu long tea. This wassignificantly higher than the energy expenditure observed afterdrinking other types of tea.Another study found that wu long tea can suppress lipidmetabolism which has the effect of suppressing fatty accumulationand body weight increases. The study concludes that long-termconsumption of wu long tea is beneficial for the suppression ofdiet induced obesity.Health-promoting compounds such as polyphenols and catechins arepresent in all types of tea, but hand picked wu long tea is thebest source because the pickers are selecting the best leavesfrom the tea plant. Machine harvesting is indiscriminate andshould be avoided - older leaves and twigs are harvested alongwith the newer leaves.Wu long tea is not a miracle cure for weight problems. Weightloss involves following a sensible, healthy diet, and a change inlifestyle to include an adequate amount of exercise. Wu long teahowever, can give you the extra boost to help in your weight lossplans, but it must be used as part of an overall strategy toimprove your living habits.Enjoy the holidays and the festivities involved, don't undertakecrash weight loss programs and adopt a healthy lifestyleincluding Wu long tea!-------------------------------------------------------Jon M. Green Tea's Effect On Body Fat

Losing weight is a subject on the minds of many. Our eat on therun, tv watching lifestyle has led many of us to have biggerwaistlines than we'd like; and bigger waistlines than arehealthy for us. In fact, the US Centers for Disease Controlestimates that over 60 million Americans, or 30% of the adultpopulation, are obese.Obesity related illnesses are going to lead the pack as causes ofdeath in our country very soon if we don't get ourselves back ontrack. Obesity leads to heart disease, high blood pressure, TypeII diabetes and increases your risk for some forms of cancer. Asour weight increases, so do our risk levels. So, how do we go about losing the weight? Well, most of us areaware that we need to eat less and exercise more. Putting morecalories into our bodies than we burn off in a day leads toweight gain. Cutting calories and getting exercise can help youget your expenditure and intake in line. There's certainly nogetting around this basic weight loss principle. But, research is showing that there are some foods that can helpyou lose weight, and other foods that will pack on the poundsfaster than you can say "calorie". I'm not talking strictlycalories here - I'm talking about foods that help you burn fator stay full longer versus foods that cannot be used by the bodyas energy, so they automatically turn to fat.Let's look at foods that can help you. You might be surprised atsome of these - they're not all low calorie. However, they'reknown to help you feel full longer or burn fat.Nuts - Nuts, especially almonds, have been found to be helpful atlosing weight. Now, nuts are not exactly a low calorie food, andthey must be eaten in moderation. However, they are verynutritious.Nuts are high in fat, but it's HDL fat, which is the kind thatpromotes good cholesterol in the blood. HDL cholesterol helps ridthe body of LDL cholesterol, which is the bad cholesterol thatclogs arteries and leads to heart attacks and strokes.Nuts are thought to make us feel full longer. In addition, theycontain protein that seems to burn a lot of calories duringdigestion. Doctors are somewhat unclear as to how nuts work, butthey do seem to have an effect on weight loss.Milk - Research has shown that those who drink 24 ounces of lowfat milk every day tend to weigh less than those who do not drinkmilk. Again, the reasons are not clear, but low fat milk doesseem to speed up the metabolism. One study showed that women whoate a reduced calorie diet that included 3-4 servings of low fatdairy products and exercised lost more weight than those who atea reduced calorie diet with fewer servings of dairy andexercised.Green Tea - In recent years, green tea has gained a lot ofattention for its ability to protect health and prevent disease.Green tea has been shown to prevent heart disease, cancer,Alzheimer's disease and even Type II diabetes. But, more andmore, we're finding out that green tea may have lots ofpotential to help weight loss, too.First, let's talk about what's so special about green tea. Themagic is in the anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants are importantbecause they fight free radicals in our bodies.Free radicals are damaging molecules that are created as weconvert the food we eat into energy. Free radicals damage cellsand DNA, leading to disease, if left unchecked. That's why it'sso important to get anti-oxidants in our diets each day. Fruitsand vegetables are also good sources of anti-oxidants.But, some of the most potent anti-oxidants around are those foundin green tea. Tea anti-oxidants are known as catechins, and theymake up about 25% of the weight of a dry tea leaf. Tea containsfour main catechin substances: epicatechin (EC), epicatechingallate (ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epigallocatechingallate (EGCG). Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the mostabundant catechin in tea.Health professionals favor green tea over black tea because itretains more of these catechins in their natural form than blacktea. Black tea goes through a fermentation process that changessome of these catechins from their original state into one thatis less healthy. It's these catechins that seem to have theability to help us lose weight. One particular study looked at Japanese men. All of the men werefed the same healthy diet for two weeks before the actual studybegan. Then, a 12 week study period began, in which some of themen drank one bottle of tea that contained 690 mg of teacatechins each day. The rest of the men were fed one bottle oftea that contained just 22 mg of catechins each day. All of themen continued on a healthy diet.At the end of the study, the men who ingested 690 mg of teacatechins each day had significantly lowered their BMI, bodyweight, waist circumference and body fat mass, when compared tothe men who consumed fewer tea catechins. The study concludedthat the catechins in tea can help to reduce body fat when partof a healthy diet. So, while we know that to lose weight we have to reduce ourcalories and get regular exercise, it's nice to know that thereare foods out there that can help us meet our goals more easily. So, add some nuts, milk and green tea to your healthy diet, andwatch how your body changes!-------------------------------------------------------Jon M. High Protein Diet - Opposite to a Low Carb Diet?

By: Trevor Mulholland High protein diets are usually associated with low carbohydrates, even though people who have high protein requirements, like professional body builders, are not advised to go on a low carb diet. Protein is one of the most important nutrients necessary for health. The body uses it to build muscle, replenish cells, keep the blood in optimum condition, and basically to keep the body operating smoothly. If done properly, a high protein diet will keep you strong, healthy, and happy.A high protein diet can provoke weight loss, as several studies have indicated. Proteins are composed of amino acids, and science has shown that if your amino acids are deficient, you are prone to a number of health problems, including obesity. If you concentrate on protein-rich foods and minimize your intake of refined food that have a high carbohydrate and sugar content, after a while, your body will enter into a state called ketosis. Instead of burning carbohydrates as fuel, the body will turn to fat as its primary source of energy. Simply put, the less carbs you have in your body to burn, the more fat your body will use to give you the energy you need to live from day to day.In addition, it has been proven that eating protein-rich foods leaves you feeling full longer and you will find that you are much less inclined to snack or go on an eating binge. This is because your blood sugar and insulin levels are kept within the normal range you'll be keeping undue hunger at arm's length.Going on a high protein diet does not mean, however, that you are free to gorge on any and every type of protein. You would do well to avoid fried foods dripping in oil or margarine-smothered products. The reason for this is because these foods contain so-called trans-fats and other bad oils and fats that can lead to clogged arteries and heart disease. However, there is a wealth of other types of fatty, protein rich foods that are quite nutritious. As is common knowledge, meat is an excellent source of protein. Pork and beef contain ample amounts of this nutrient. But if you are concerned about fat, you should limit your portions of dishes containing meat. On the other hand, there is no need to worry about oils and fats if you eat fish and other seafood. Aside from being rich in protein, they contain essential fatty acids that improve your blood cholesterol levels and help prevent ailments like stroke and coronary artery disease. So you need not have any qualms about indulging your appetite at a seafood buffet - most of them can do no harm, only good. Many plant products also have a rich amount of protein in them. Soy-based produce like tofu and soy milk are suitable for those trying to lose weight on a high protein regimen. So are pulses and beans. Not only are they protein-rich, they are usually low-fat and low-carbohydrate as well. There have been concerns that a diet rich in protein can have adverse health effects. Some health experts claim that too much protein can deplete the body's calcium supply and lead to diseases like osteoporosis. Another concern is that the kidneys are forced to deal with more byproducts, thus lessening their efficiency. And there are indications that too much protein increases uric acid levels, which can lead to gout or kidney stones. However, the jury is still out on whether protein is the major culprit in these conditions. More, longer-term research is needed to determine this although there are also many studies that are being conducted to explore these problems, their extent, and their possible resolutions.A high protein diet may not be for everyone, but for a vast number of people, it not only helps them in their weight loss efforts, it keeps them healthy, too! If you are considering going on this diet, always remember your limits and stick to the rules. It's possible to modify it a little bit in various ways (such as reducing the intake of saturated fats) to suit your personal taste, but don't deviate from the "main course." Choose your protein sources wisely, don't forget to exercise, don't be a glutton (it's one of the seven deadly sins, after all) and just watch the pounds melt away.Article Source: http://www.nulife-weightloss.com/articlesCarb-club.com provides you with information on all kinds of issues like high protein diet and diets like the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet, the Zone diet, and more. Extreme Weight Loss Plan: Is It For You?

Nothing beats a balanced diet and regular exercise as healthy ways to lose weight. But it is quite a tall order for many who are stuck in front of computers all day. Here is a rundown on extreme weight-loss plan available in most countries today, and the possible risks involved.1. Hormone TherapyQuite holistic, this approach basically involves taking an anti-aging medicine. As the body ages, hormone levels go down, the pituitary glands stop producing growth hormones, and one's metabolism slows, making weight gain very easy and losing weight a challenge. The goal of this method is to bring the body's function back to its 20'the age when the body is at its peak. Weight loss is a result of the increases rate of metabolism. Ten to twenty pounds can easily be lost, but then after that it may come back. The therapy, however, can also replenish growth hormones, firm the muscles, and tighten the skin.Hormonal therapy is best for people whose hormones are not in tip-top shape but whose will power is. Health experts say that most people who follow this regimen tend to let their appetite go since they now have faster metabolism. The RisksOverdose and hyperthyroidism are the main risks. There is also an ongoing controversy about this approach and cancer. If an individual is genetically predisposed to cancer cells, the growth hormones may trigger the sleeping cancer cells to grow. This theory is not yet medically proven, but requires careful consideration.2. LiposuctionAccording to some 2003 statistical reports, liposuction was considered as the well known "cosmetic surgery" method in the United States, with approximately more than 380,000 cases performed. The need for liposuction is feasible for people who have extreme fat deposits. Some people have certain areas in their body that are predisposed to easy formation of fatty deposits like the abdomen, the hips, and the arms.Cosmetic surgeons claim that liposuction is essentially a surgical technique that involves a probe being inserted into the patient's body and liquefying the fat prior to suctioning it out.The most commonly used method of liposuction is the wet method, which is an outpatient procedure that takes around an hour and a half to perform. On the other hand, the dry method involves general anesthesia for liposuction on all parts of the body in one session. Tending to be bloody and painful, this approach causes 99% of lipo mortalities. The LimitationsLiposuction allows the removal of fat deposits from a patient's body in a single operation by as much as 10 pounds. Also, keep in mind that liposuction is really not a mere procedure for weight loss. Rather, it is a "cosmetic surgical procedure" designed to contour the body by removing extra fat not even requiring a minor surgery to take away extra skin or to put away huge "permanent scars".Liposuction is best for individuals with a healthy mind and body. Patients with healthy skin will find that their skin will respond positively to their new body contours. The RisksIn some cases of liposuction, the risk of getting an infection is possible, as with any surgery, for that matter. Thus, a prophylactic is administered before the procedure. Also, pulmonary embolism happens in one in 100,000 patients of liposuction. This happens when an amount of loosened fat travels the body and reaches post-surgery may prevent this.3. Bariatric SurgeryThis is the last resort for those who suffer from what is called morbid obesity, a case of being overweight by 100 pounds or more. There are two ways to do bariatric surgery:a. The "Lap Band System"This type of bariatric surgery works on the principle of stomach stapling, but instead of stapling, a removable band is placed to restrict the stomach. Placed laparoscopically, the "band" is pretty much like a belt that can be tightened or loosened, only worn inside the body. The modifiable band is a "silicone elastomer hollow ring" packed with saline and mounted surrounding the higher portion of the stomach creating a fresh miniature "stomach pouch", with the larger portion of the stomach underneath the band, thereby, reducing the storage space.b. Gastric Bypass SurgeryOtherwise known as stomach, stapling, gastric bypass surgery involves reducing the size of the stomach so that a patient feels full after only a diminutive quantity of food, from one ounce to three ounces. The result is an immediate decrease in calorie intake and the long-term reducing in weight.Indeed, there are many kinds of weight loss plans available in the market today. Some may be beneficial for one, but could be harmful to the others. The key is to find out which weight loss plan will best work for you. With any extreme weight loss plan you should always weigh the risks compared to the benefits.Talk it over with your health care practitioner and your family and always wait at least six months before having the surgery. During this six months, eat the most nutritional foods possible, work with your doctor on starting an exercise plan and get your body as healthy as possible. Surgery does take a toll on the body so you need to treat it well before and after. The six month wait will also give you time to really think it out and decide if you are mentally prepared for an extreme weight loss plan. There is a good chance that after the wait, you may change your mind and go for more subtle ways of weight loss.Patricia has been interested in weight loss & fitness since the early 70's and knows the difference between hype & fact. Treadmills And Ellipticals - Online Buying Vs Offline Buying

Ohiyo! As the Treadmill Sensei and knower of all things fitnessrelated, a lot of readers email me here at the DOJO and ask,"Oh, great Sensei, where should I purchase my new treadmill orelliptical? Should I buy it at a local store or online? Whichis better?" While I don't really like recommending specific stores orwebsites to purchase from, I can break down the pros and consof placing an internet order versus going in to a local storeand buying the unit from a brick and mortar location. I'm notgoing to get in to "how to choose" in this post because I'vealready done that in my "Treadmill Buyer's Guide" and"Elliptical Buyer's Guide" articles. Check them out if youhaven't already done so. The single best way to start researching a treadmill, and theeasiest, is to load up your favorite search engine and startpoking around. The internet has more information on it than anysales rep at a brick and mortar store...more than any 10 salesreps combined into a super sales rep. Start with review siteslike this one (the Treadmill Sensei, www.treadmillsensei.com).Take a look at multiple sites because a lot of them out therehave personal agendas in regards to which treadmill orelliptical they are "prescribing." I'd suggest checking with atleast 3 sources. Once you've got a decent handle on a few ellipticals ortreadmills that meet your needs, I suggest trying to find alocal store to go and try them out. This is a large purchasefor most people and it is for a piece of equipment that you'regoing to spend a lot of time sweating on. Make sure the unitfeels good to you. Once you're completely convinced you've found the perfecttreadmill for yourself or the perfect elliptical for your den,get back online and start doing some price comparison. Thereare a lot of places online that will give you some fantasticprices on equipment. You'll also generally get free shippingand won't have to pay sales tax. Shopping online can save youhundreds dollars on the "hidden costs" that will pop up whenpurchasing at a local fitness store. Let's go over some of the pros and cons for online storesversus local shops. Local Stores -- The Pros: 1) The best thing about a local store is that you'll be able totry out the actual equipment you've been researching online. Youcan do a run on a treadmill or take a quick workout on thatelliptical you've had your eyes on. 2) The other positive is that you'll be able to walk out thedoor with the equipment right there. You see it, you like it,you buy it and you take it home. Instant gratification is awonderful thing. Local Stores -- The Cons: 1) You may get instant gratification, but more than likelyit'll cost you. Even if the actual cost of the elliptical ortreadmill is good at a local shop, don't forget you're going tobe hit with taxes which can add up to a hundred dollars or moreon a lot of the treadmills and ellipticals. You might save that$25 or $50 on the price of your dream treadmill but that getseaten up by $80 in sales taxes! 2) From there, you'd better have a big truck or SUV to cartthat unit home because once you buy it you'll have to deliverit yourself! Or, for anywhere from $50-$200, that local storecan deliver it for you. 3) Now, the biggest Con about brick and mortar stores inproduct knowledge. Unfortunately, in my experience, most brickand mortar sales cashiers have very little actual productknowledge. In fact, if you go to your local seller of sportinggoods/fitness equipment you'll find it very hard to even getsomeone to help you! Most of the reps you'll encounter aregoing to be young kids who get paid a minimum wage for aminimum amount of work...which is a shame because that will bea turnoff for most people interested in actually buying atreadmill or elliptical. 4) The last major problem you'll find at a local store is:pushy salesmen. There's nothing I hate worse than a salesperson who treats me like an idiot and pushes hard on whateverproduct will get them the best commission. I dislike the "usedcar" style sales people you'll find at a lot of fitnessspecialty stores. There is a big company here in the LA areathat is known for their hard-selling salesmen who bullycustomers in to some truly bad equipment. If a salesmen getspushy with you just walk out and don't go back. There are lotsof other places to buy a treadmill or elliptical where youwon't have to put up with that sort of attitude. Internet Stores -- The Pros: 1) You'll find the widest selection of product around. The bigfitness sites will have hundred or thousands of productsavailable for you to take a look at and compare. 2) With that extensive product selection you'll also find a lotmore product knowledge. If you've got a question or problem, youcan generally call up or email an online rep and find them to beincredibly well-informed on everything they carry. 3) You will also find better pricing, free delivery in mostcases and most of the time you won't have to pay taxes. Whenyou add it all up you'll find yourself saving a lot of time andmoney when ordering online. Internet Stores -- The Cons: 1) No instant gratification -- you will be waiting around 2-3weeks to receive your order. Most of the units will be shippedout via a freight company which take 7-10 business days totravel across the country. 2) The big con for internet stores is that you don't get totouch or test out their equipment. You're having to deal withfacts and opinions. Luckily, there are tons of sites out thereand you'll be able to get a good idea of what is a well-builtmachine and which ones are duds (Icon Fitness). All-in-all, buying online is a lot easier and less painful. Thebrick and mortar shops have their place (say, for buying a floormodel at a ridiculously low price), but for buying a newtreadmill or elliptical I'd say check out online stores for agreat deal and larger selection. That's it for today. Take care! -The Treadmill SenseiAbout The Author: The Treadmill Sensei is your source forreviews and information on treadmills and ellipticals. Hoodia And The Quest For Easy Weight Loss

As each new day passes by, there seem to be more and more weight loss methods being developed by various health experts, fitness experts, and nutritionists, especially in referance to diets and exercise equipment. Wherever we look around the world, there are unique offerings and weight loss products, such as slimming teas, pills, diet books, electronic weight loss machines, and many more. The innovations do not stop there, researchers seem to continue to look for ways to improve weight loss methods. One of the discoveries that work with weight loss is what is known as Hoodia. This is a revolutionized diet pill that effectively kills your appetite so that you do not have to search for food at odd times during the day. Hoodia not only does this, it also gives you a warm and positive feeling about yourself (good mood) as well as seemingly limitless energy to get you through the day. What is Hoodia? In simple terms, Hoodia is a plant usually found in South Africa and some neighboring countries (like Angola) in which the indigenous people of these locations use for treating minor ailments such as indigestion. Some of the indigenous people also use this as a way to fight hunger pangs, even for days, without any noticeable side effect. Hoodia (scientific term Hoodia Gordonii), once discovered by Westerners, wanted this incredible plant with the purpose of transforming it into a weight-loss diet pill.Hoodia, being a mostly, if not totally, organic pill, has a lot of benefits with little to no ill effects. It works by sending your brain, specifically the hypothalamus, various signals that you are full, although in reality, this is not the case. Even if you have not eaten yet and you take in Hoodia, there is the feeling of being full and not wanting food. This plant is seemingly a wonder plant because not only does it provide you with the ability to feel full, but it also works as some form of energy food, since it gives you a boost. It is said to give the African tribesmen, who take it, enough energy to hunt throughout the day, despite the heat and the effort associated with hunting. Don't think that because it is night time, it means that the effects have worn off, they still have energy to perform whatever evening chores they have to.There are no known side effects of this plant, however, common sense would tell us that our body still needs the proper amount of food and water. If you take in too much of Hoodia, or use it as a replacement for food, then your body will not get the proper nutrition it requires, which will lead to ailments and illnesses ultimately. Hoodia should be used as a supplement, mostly to prevent you from eating excess food (or during snack time), not as a means to prevent yourself from eating totally.Best Hoodia productsDue to the discovery of the Hoodia plant and its wonders, various manufacturers have innovated diet pills that feature this plant. In choosing which brand to buy, there are two things to look out for. First make sure it is 100% Hoodia, meaning it is organic and does not have any artificial add-ons, and, it should come from Hoodia Gordonii plant. Without these two factors, it is probably a fake or inferior Hoodia which do not offer the full benefits of the real one.Hoodia has been researched and proven to be beneficial in weight loss. It is gaining popularity since it provides benefits without any side effects. Try using Hoodia to combat your weight problems.Patricia has been interested in weight loss & fitness since the early 70's and knows the difference between hype & fact. Things You Should Know About Alcohol Detox

First off, when attempting to get off alcohol or drugs, beadvised that medical personnel should always monitor any kindof detoxification in order to provide prompt and educated aidto those striving to rid their bodies of the effects of chronicalcohol and drug abuse. An alcohol detox program is only thefirst of many steps that alcoholics will take on the long roadto recovery.Withdrawal is the first process that an alcoholic must take tobegin the cleansing process that will ultimately remove alltraces of alcohol from their body systems. With alcoholism ordrug abuse, the body becomes dependent on those drugs oralcohol, and during an alcohol detox, withdrawal is the processby which drug or alcohol induced toxins are exorcised from thebody. It isn't easy, and many people aren't mentally orphysically prepared for the process. But with an alcohol detoxprogram, that's only the first step. The next step, therapeuticand emotional counseling, are only begun after the person hascompleted the alcohol withdrawal process. Some well meaningpeople try to skip to the second step first, but such anendeavor is useless, as any remnant of alcohol in the body willcontinue to induce cravings for it, thereby defeating any andall arguments to the contrary. The term, alcohol detox, is officially defined as the period oftime it takes someone to overcome his or her physical dependenceand need for alcohol. In an alcohol detox rehab center, thisprocess is carefully and closely monitored by trained medicalpersonnel experienced in dealing with the moods andtemperaments of alcoholics on the road to recovery. The endgoal of an alcohol detox program is to free the alcoholic ofthe addictive effect of alcohol on their body, in addition tohelping them get through that most difficult process as painfree as possible. An alcohol detox center will offer expertguidance and advice to those wishing to enroll in their programand to help people get a good start on the road to a long-termrecovery. For the most part, an alcohol detox program iscompleted within an in-patient, medical type setting so thatpatients can be closely monitored and helped.Experiencing alcohol detox isn't pleasant and can producesymptoms that express both physically and emotionally. Many whohave completed an alcohol detox program claim the experience, though necessary, was traumatic and withdrawal from alcohol ordrugs can produce both physical and mental manifestations thatrange from mild to alarmingly severe. That's why it's soimportant for people to go through an alcohol detox process ina licensed facility with fully trained medical staff on hand tooversee the process. Some people experience headaches, the'shakes', vomiting, insomnia and even delirium tremors, morecommonly known as the 'DTs' and even seizures. Supervisedalcohol detox is recommended, especially since one in fourpatients may experience severe withdrawal symptoms likeseizures and convulsions. An alcohol detox program can take within three to seven days inmost cases, and then the rehabilitation process begins. It's notan easy battle, but with the help of an alcohol detox program, aperson has a high chance of not only a healthy recovery, butalso a less stressful one.About The Author: Need to know more about alcohol detox? Nutrition - Good Fat vs. Bad Fat

By: Tracie Johanson This series of articles deals with nutrition. We've all heard the old saying 'you are what you eat', so let's take a good long look at what we're putting in our bodies. Most of us WANT to eat healthier, but sometimes it seems that forces are working against us. Fast food is just so tempting. Sally at the office brought donuts to share again. Our schedule is so busy we don't have time to cook healthy food. Finally, it's true that junk food is often less expensive than healthy food. How fair is that?Today's topic is fat. Not all fat is bad! As a matter of fact, some fats are downright good for you. The key is understanding the difference between the two.GOOD FAT:Over the years, Americans have been fed different stories about choosing the right foods for optimum health. When researchers warned that too much fat in your diet leads to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and a host of other health problems, Americans jumped on the low fat, no fat bandwagon with little success.New studies reveal that we must have some fat in our diet for good health and reduction of disease. The omega-3 fatty acids are said to be 'essential' because they can not be produced by the body and must be obtained through our food sources.Omega-3 essential fatty acids can come from either plant or marine sources. They can be found in fish and fish oil, unrefined vegetable oils, raw nuts, seeds and beans. Linolenic acid, the marine source, can be found in certain fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon. These fish and fish oil supplements contain bioavailable docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acid, the two kinds of omega-3 essential fatty acids crucial to good health. The plant based omega-3 essential fatty acid is alpha linolenic acid (alpha meaning plant) and can be found in omega-3 rich oils such as flaxseed, canola, soybean and walnut oils. These plant sourced omega-3 EFAs don't metabolize in the body like fish oil. They need to be broken down by the body's enzymatic system into DHA and EPA before the body can reap its powerful benefits. Flaxseed oil, the plant source highest in omega-3s, is a great alternative for vegetarians and those who can't tolerate fish or fish oil capsules.BAD FAT:The worst kinds of fat are trans fats and saturated fats."Trans-fatty acids are bad for hearts and arteries. They drive up production of cholesterol like saturated-fatty acids [i.e. like butter, animal fat, etc.], and promote atherosclerosis... I am certain that TFA's will eventually be found to be detrimental to health in many other ways as a result of their effect on membrane and hormone function. I believe they promote the development of cancer and degenerative disease, increase inflammation, accelerate aging, and obstruct immunity and healing. Therefore, I make a scrupulous attempt to keep them out of my diet, and I urge you to do the same. In practice that means avoiding margarine, vegetable shortening, and all products made with them or with partially hydrogenated oils of any kind." [Dr. Andrew Weil from his book: Eating Well for Optimum Health" pp. 90-93:]How do you spot transfatty acids? Look for "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" in the list of ingredients. They're all over the place.THE COST:It is possible to eat more healthy fats without breaking the bank. Yes, fish is fairly expensive when compared to other meats, but a healthier diet doesn't have to be expensive. Some money-saving ideas on this topic:1) Buy fish on sale.2) Many grocers sell flash-frozen fillets which taste almost as good as fresh, but cost a whole lot less.3) Ask the butcher when fish is 'cheapest'. Prices can vary widely throughout the year. Stock up when the price is right.4) Shop the ads. Buy fish only when it's on sale, even if you have to visit a store other than your favorite.5) Buy the 'whole fish', which is always less expensive than buying fillets or fish steaks.6) Be very careful to shop price when looking for flax seed. Bulk flax seed at the local supermarket typically sells for 89 cents per pound. The exact same flax seed at a national health food store sells for $9.99 per pound. Sure, the health food store sells it in a pretty gold bag - but $9.99 per pound? Who are they kidding?7) If you can't stand the taste of fish, consider fish oil or flax seed oil supplements. Affordable and easy to swallow, these are a great alternative.8) Walnuts are an excellent source of good fats. Buy in bulk to save money. Even better, stock up during the holidays when they're on sale.9) Don't be afraid to use coupons. Check your Sunday newspaper for coupon inserts.10) Finally, look for a 'sell by' sale. Fish (and other perishable items) are required by law to state a 'sell by' date. This is the day by which the retailer must sell that product. Often times, a grocer will dramatically reduce the price of fish (or other items) on the 'sell by date'.....they either sell it below cost or lose all their money the next day (it is a health code violation to sell perishable items past their sell by date). We've barely scratched the surface of this topic: good fat vs. bad fat. It would be a good idea for each of us to do some more research on fats and how they can impact our health.Article Source: http://www.nulife-weightloss.com/articlesTracie Johanson is the founder of Pick Up The Pace, a 30-minute exercise studio for women focusing on fitness, health and nutrition for maximum weight loss. Alcoholism Requires Recognition And Treatment

He was only about fifty-eight years old when he died. My formerboss was an alcoholic. In fact, I doubt he could functionwithout a drink. He was in the restaurant business and he couldbe seen mixing it up with patrons always obviously drunk. Yet,he was a highly 'functional' alcoholic. He made a flamingdessert drink for the customers.Alcoholism hurts people, it damages lives and the addiction isa leech that controls and dominates the person it is attachedto. Alcohol treatment can help, but it can only help if theperson wants to change. My former boss was a really nice guy. He had a really nicefamily, lived in a nice place and was successful in his field.I liked him, I liked his family. Maybe one of the lessons hetaught me was to never take up his bad habit. Not too long ago, I ran into a young woman. She was verybeautiful. When I saw her 6 months later her face had beenscarred by an automobile accident. Her boyfriend was drivingdrunk. He felt so guilty about it that he agreed to go to arehab center to get his drug and alcohol problem under control.Unfortunately, this kind of tragedy had to happen for them towake up to the reality of their problem.I knew another guy when I served in the Navy, he was one of thefunniest people I'd ever met. But he had to have a drink all ofthe time. To me, one of the worst things in the world is to beso dependent on a substance that you can't function without it.He was young then. Many years have passed and I wonder what kindof shape he is in today.A former high school classmate was the president of S.A.D.D.(Students Against Drunk Driving). Just two months or so beforegraduation she was struck and killed by a drunk driver. Shedidn't get to see her own graduation except maybe from above. The list goes on and on. I'm sure you have your own list ofalcohol related situations and problems to draw from. Everyonedoes, because the problem of alcohol abuse and addiction iswide spread. Is it possible to break an addiction to alcohol? The answer isyes, but the addicted person needs to be willing to do so. Ifhe or she is not willing, not much can be done. Unfortunately, before a person can be willing to do so, he needs to admit tohimself and others that he actually has a problem. Our society and culture make it far too easy to explain away analcohol problem or to hide the fact from others or worse, fromone's self. The critical factor to getting help and removingthe addiction or at least controlling it is the person himself. The willingness to change has to be there coupled withrecognition that the problem exists.Growing up in an environment littered with alcoholics makes iteven more difficult to recognize alcoholism as a problem. Thisperson may have grown up thinking that excessive alcohol use isnormal. The health of the physical body can be seriously damaged. Theliver is very important to a person's survival and alcoholabuse can damage that vital organ.Finding a good alcohol treatment program can help immensely.Getting away from the enabling environment that contributes toalcoholism can be very beneficial to the alcoholic's recovery. If you have an addiction or any kind of health problem or thinkyou might, please contact your physician for proper diagnosisand treatment.About The Author: David Snape writes for To Be Informed. Trying A Liposuction Alternative

With the availability of plastic surgery in todays world, itsno wonder that more and more of us are turning to medicalintervention. But the costs, risks, and recovery associatedwith liposuction should give interested parties pause. Instead, experimentation with a liposuction alternative could yield muchthe same results as surgery without the negatives associatedwith such a medical procedure.Liposuction is a surgical procedure wherein the surgeon makestiny incisions around an area that is storing an excessiveamount of body fat. Through the incisions, an instrument isinserted that literally vacuums the fat from the body. Mostoften, the patient is put under general anesthesia and, ofcourse, there are always risks associated with that. Further, the surgeon very actively removes the fat during a liposuctionprocedure pushing the instrument into the body firmly. Thiscan leave the patient feeling sore afterwards. If you consider the risks and recovery associated withliposuction, you can understand why more and more people areseeking a liposuction alternative to achieve the desiredresults for their body.Additionally, the truth about liposuction is that it in no waytakes the place of proper diet and exercise. You can not simplyhave a liposuction procedure in order to lose weight and thencontinue to eat poorly and live a sedentary lifestyle.Liposuction is by no means a magic bullet; and the patients whothink that it is are very often sorely disappointed.Rather, the very principles of a healthy lifestyle are the mosteffective liposuction alternative. Eating a healthy diet rich inwhole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins will go a long way to transforming your body. Not only are you protecting yourself against a variety ofillness but you are literally sculpting lean muscle massthrough diet. Of course, the second portion of this isconsistent physical exercise. Your program should combinecardiovascular work with weight training to achieve awell-toned body. When addressing the trouble spots that so many people turn toliposuction to solve, you may want to consider working with apersonal trainer as a liposuction alternative. A trainer canshow you how to target these spots with specific exercises thatachieve results. You may find that once you begin implementing a liposuctionalternative that the thought of surgery becomes less and lessattractive. Research some methods that may work for you; whenit comes to avoiding surgery, it is certainly worth the try.About The Author: For easy to understand, in depth informationabout liposuction visit our ezGuide 2http://liposuction.ezguide2.com

Diet moderation

An ancient Greek philosopher wrotepan metron ariston, which means attempt everything you do with moderation and balance. It is simple yet wise advice. This principle must be used in all aspects of life. MODERATION, BALANCE, and VARIETY must be applied to your eating habits, exercise activity, leisure time, hobbies, and work. If you spend enormous amounts of time and effort on one thing whatever it might be, you usually do so at the expense of other important endeavors. You must therefore set priorities and manage your time efficiently. By doing so you will be able to maintain a balance between all of lifes essentials, such as family life, health, finances, etc.
